Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is an annual plant of the Asteraceae family, known in Persian as Golrang / گلرنگ and in French as Carthame des teinturiers. It is a cultivated plant with a long history of use, especially for its colourful florets and its oil-rich seeds.

The name “tinctorius” refers to dyeing, because the flowers of safflower were traditionally used as a source of yellow to orange-red natural dyes. Today, the plant is also known as an oilseed crop, with seeds used for producing safflower oil.

From a botanical point of view, safflower is interesting because it combines the appearance of a thistle-like Asteraceae with agricultural, medicinal and cultural uses. Its bright flower heads, spiny leaves and compact inflorescences make it easily recognizable in cultivation.

گلرنگ

گلرنگ با نام علمی Carthamus tinctorius L. گیاهی یک‌ساله از خانواده کاسنیان یا Asteraceae است. این گیاه در فارسی با نام گلرنگ و در فرانسه با نام Carthame des teinturiers شناخته می‌شود.

گلرنگ از گذشته به‌دلیل گل‌های رنگین و دانه‌های روغنی‌اش مورد توجه بوده است. واژه tinctorius در نام علمی این گیاه به کاربرد رنگرزی آن اشاره دارد، زیرا گل‌های آن به‌طور سنتی برای تهیه رنگ‌های طبیعی زرد تا نارنجی-قرمز استفاده می‌شدند. امروزه این گیاه بیشتر به‌عنوان یک گیاه روغنی نیز شناخته می‌شود.

از نظر گیاه‌شناسی، گلرنگ به‌دلیل ظاهر خاردار، برگ‌های دندانه‌دار و گل‌آذین‌های فشرده و رنگی، نمونه‌ای جالب از خانواده Asteraceae است.
